Black Friday

Well, we spent the better part of the day at the mall, and didn’t buy a thing. Such restraint. We did go to see “The Incredibles” at the Ontario Mills mall theatre tho… that was a fun movie.

Happy Thanksgiving!

back in the city

Posted by Stevious in General, General, Ge... | 11.23.2004 - 12:27 pm

We got over to TKTS this morning and bought tickets to see a show again tonight. This time we’re seeing “Joseph and the amazing technicolor dreamcoat”. After getting the tickets, we jumped back on the tube and headed over to St. Paul’s Cathedral. For some reason, I had missed going there before. We took lots of pictures there. Then off to Harrod’s for a bit of shopping before dinner and the show. It turns out that both of the shows we saw were within close walking distance of the hotel. Thanks to George Bush’s irresponsible fiscal policy, everything cost about double what it did the last time we were here in 2000. roll

Day Trip

Posted by Stevious in General, General, Ge... | 11.22.2004 - 11:55 am

We booked a tour to Windsor, Stonehenge and Bath for today. The bus picked us up at 7:40 AM, and dropped us back off at 10:00 PM. This was a good day, lots to see and a change of scenery. I hadn’t been to Windsor Castle before, so that was cool, got to see the changing of the guard there. Had lunch in a 600 year old pub. The food was apparently not quite that old. lol

Then, on to Stonehenge, which seemed different than the last time I had been there, new parking facilities, and an audio tour. Still the same old rocks tho…

Bath was OK too, glad to have gotten out to see and do some different stuff for the day.

Next time, remind me to go by myself, I’ll get more done. I think I’ll take a ski vacation by myself in January. Oh, we saw Bat Boy, the musical… was interesting, and kind of funny. Today we saw the dismounting of the Horse Guards at Whitehall, Big Ben, Parliament, and a few other tourist attractions. Meanwhile, somebody slept in till nearly 2:00 pm. Why would you fly 12 hours to sleep all day? roll

Lend Your PC Power to Researchers

Posted by Stevious in General, General, Ge... | 11.16.2004 - 10:07 pm

What if the power of the world’s 650 million PCs could be harnessed and focused on humanity’s most pressing issues? World Community Grid does just that. idea

You simply download a free, small software program onto your computer. In just minutes, you’ll be ready to go. Whenever your computer is idle, you can join others to send unused cycle time to World Community Grid – which will combine all that donated computer power and use it for humanitarian purposes.

Projects address humanitarian issues

The first World Community Grid initiative is the Human Proteome Folding Project, which will help scientists develop solutions that address global issues such as cures for HIV/AIDS, SARS, and malaria. Later projects could include predicting natural disasters such as earthquakes or floods, or improving the safety of the world’s water supply.

Here’s how to participate:

Install the software from www.worldcommunitygrid.org. !

Another Bush Story

Posted by Stevious in General, General, Ge... | 11.12.2004 - 7:04 pm

“President” Bush was visiting a primary school and he visited one of the classes. They were in the middle of a discussion related to words and their meanings.

The teacher asked the President if he would like to lead the discussion on the word “tragedy”.

So the illustrious leader asked the class for an example of a “tragedy”.

One little boy stood up and offered: “If my best friend, who lives on a farm, is playing in the field and a tractor runs over him and kills him, that would be a tragedy.” No,” said Bush, “that would be an accident.”

A little girl raised her hand: “If a school bus carrying 50 children drove over a cliff, killing everyone inside, that would be a tragedy.” “I’m afraid not,” explained the president. “That’s what we would call great loss.”

The room went silent. No other children volunteered. Bush searched the room. “Isn’t there someone here who can give me an example of a tragedy?”

Finally at the back of the room a small boy raised his hand… In a quiet voice he said: “If Air Force One carrying you and Mrs. Bush was struck by a “friendly fire” missile and blown to smithereens, that would be a tragedy.”

“Fantastic!” exclaimed Bush. “That’s right. And can you tell me why that would be a tragedy?”

“Well,” says the boy, “It has to be a tragedy, because it certainly wouldn’t be a great loss and it probably wouldn’t be an accident either.”

lol
